Truman Boerkoel as a radio amateur
Truman Boerkoel lived at a time when electricity had only just been invented and was widely used. With the advent of electricity, countless devices were invented that ran on it, offering all sorts of new possibilities, such as lighting, machinery, household appliances, communication, and so on. Truman Boerkoel was also an electrical engineer and worked for various companies as an inventor, salesman, and consultant. His father, John D. Boerkoel, was a civil engineer and encouraged his technical development.
Truman Boerkoel also had electrical engineering as a hobby, as a radio amateur under the code name K8JUG. Due to the often great distances in America, the invention of radio communication was a wonderful means of communication. And so, associations and clubs soon emerged that worked together on building radio transmitters and developing all kinds of applications. Truman lived in Xenia, Ohio. One of the frequently major problems in his region there was the unpredictability of tornadoes at the time. Together with several other radio amateurs, he founded the organization Xwarn, with the aim of setting up an early warning service for the region that could warn of approaching tornadoes via radio. Xwarn means Xenia Weather Warningsystem. This turned out to work quite well, and Xwarn is still committed to this cause to this day, only in a slightly different and more extensive form than before. See their website https://xwarn.net . If you visit the website, you will still see Truman Boerkoel listed as an honorary member of the founders of Xwarn in the Hall of Honor.
